11 RAGLAN ROAD - $369,900 (BUT NOW SOLD)

THE ESSENTIALS

A marvellously renovated downtown home, right around the corner from the tennis courts and pretty much across the street from the river. A third-floor master with ensuite.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The seller has just wrapped up this marvelous little house in a dark chocolate siding, and to our mind it lends it the appearance of a perfect truffle set into the centre of the sweet box of treats that is the Inner Harbour neighbourhood. The scarlet front door is set with a jeweler’s precision into its face like the fanciest of bows.

That doesn’t mean you should expect to see Tom Hanks on the front stoop first thing, bending in his velvet dressing gown to collect the morning Globe. It’s not that sort of movie.

But this really is a neighbourhood in which anything is possible. I live a few blocks north, and Cheri is the same distance to the west. We’re both thrilled to be part of everything that’s happening here. I like my morning coffee at The Elm, and my evening walk around the Woolen Mill, or through Doug Fluhrer Park.

What I’d probably like most of all is the idea of returning every evening to this smartest of homes. The seller has taken pride in restoring what a hundred years ago was a modest cottage. He’s gone back to the studs and insulated and soundproofed and rewired and re-plumbed. And then he’s had a good think about what would make most sense in 2019. A gas fireplace in the living room? Check. A second-floor laundry? You bet. A place to sleep up on the third-floor with a bathroom and a nifty new window that has views over the river? Yup.

There’s pretty much nothing we can think of that the seller hasn’t done here. The windows are new too and the place floods with light. It’s bigger in here, much bigger, than it appears from the street. It’s a long way from the front door to the back, it’s a distant horizon, and that’s always been one of the ways I judge a place that I’d like to live in.

You, though, should judge for yourselves. We look forward to showing you around.
